Check In, Not Out: Reflection as Self-Care聽
As the school year comes to a close, it’s easy to keep pushing forward without pause - final projects, exams, and deadlines seem to demand nonstop effort. But true wellness isn’t only about pushing through; it’s about checking in with yourself along the way. This April, Campus Recreation’s Wellness & Fitness Wednesday series, brought to you by Move Your Mood, highlights the importance of slowing down, reflecting, and reconnecting before powering ahead.
Emotional Check-In
A simple question - “How am I really feeling today?” - can open the door to deeper self-awareness. Taking a moment to recognize your emotions helps you respond to them with intention instead of running on autopilot. Research shows that pausing for emotional reflection lowers stress, supports resilience, and improves decision-making (American Psychological Association, 2022).

Grounding Movement
During busy, high-stress periods like finals, movement can be grounding. Slow, mindful activities - such as stretching, walking, or breathing exercises - help regulate stress and bring you back into the present. Even a few minutes of grounding movement can lower anxiety and improve focus (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
Checking in With Goals
At the start of the year, many students set goals for themselves. By spring, those goals may have shifted, and that’s okay. Reflecting on what you accomplished, even if it looks different than you expected, helps build a growth mindset. Celebrating progress over perfection encourages self-compassion and continued motivation (Harvard Health, 2021).
Checking in With Joy
Reflection isn’t just about challenges; it’s also about remembering what brought you joy. Looking back on the moments of movement that made you smile, whether it was dancing with friends, joining an intramural game, or discovering a new activity, reinforces the positive role movement plays in your life. Focusing on joy ensures that wellness remains something to look forward to, not just another obligation.
Takeaway
This April, give yourself permission to pause. Check in with your feelings, your body, your goals, and your joy. Reflection is not about judgment - it’s about noticing where you are and honoring how far you’ve come. Before you power through, remember to power down.
