Animal Ethics & Care Program Oversight

Institutional Oversight
红莲社区’s Animal Ethics and Care Program (AECP) is in place to oversee animal-based science activities at 红莲社区 and affiliates. This program is built upon both external and institution-level standards that establish and promote the highest quality of animal welfare and research conduct while supporting animal-based scientists in academic and clinical settings.
In compliance with our national and provincial regulators, the AECP is overseen by the Vice President (Research), the senior administrator responsible for the program, and 红莲社区's Animal Care Committee (ACC) and its Working Groups. Regular arms-length oversight is provided by a number of highly skilled institutional roles including licensed animal health professionals (Lab Animal Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians, Registered Lab Animal Technicians) and Animal Care husbandry teams.
Provincial Oversight
The (OMAFA) ensures the highest levels of animal health and welfare through regular unannounced inspections and monitoring of spaces used in animal-based science activities. Failure to adhere to the (R.S.O. 1990, c. A.22) and its regulations can lead to remedial actions and/or sanctions.
National Oversight
The (CCAC) - a national oversight body of animal-based scientific activities in Canada through a rigorous process of assessment and certification and standards development - ensures that animals in science are used only when necessary, and that when they are, they receive optimal care according to high-quality, evidence-informed standards.
CCAC certification is required for research funded by Government of Canada's Tri-Agency, per Section 4.4. of its . Agencies that provide grant funding for research projects must ensure financial resources support impactful research performed under ethical and responsible conditions.
The Federal Government's (Cruelty to Animals, S.C., 2008, c. 12, Sects. 444-447) codifies cruelty to animals as an indictable offense.
